Some postcards from our architecture students studying abroad in France this semester ✨ . Pictured here are snaps from their private tour of the headquarters of the Pathé Foundation, designed by @rpbw_architects in the heart of Paris; as well as their trip to Lyon, where they visited Confluence, the site of an ongoing urban design project near the southernmost tip of the Lyon peninsula. . 📸: @isssstudio . . . #UTSOA #architectureschool #studyabroad #whatstartshere
This Wednesday, the @materials_lab is hosting their last event of the semester - an open house featuring a collection of rapidly renewable materials derived from rice, bamboo, sugarcane and other plants. . Join them at 12:00 to learn how these seemingly ephemeral plants are used in a wide variety of consumer and building products that can be striking, durable, and unexpected. Grass-themed refreshments will be served! . . Reposted from @materials_lab . Here's a sneak peek at our final event of the semester: GRASSES, an exhibition of rapidly renewable materials derived from wheat, bamboo, corn, rice, and more. Navigating our library of 28,000+ samples can be daunting, so in the coming months we'll be sharing a series of curated collections showcasing diverse material themes. Join us next Wednesday, 11/13, from 12 - 1pm, for our first collection opening. No RSVP required for this one - all are welcome, and refreshments will be served! #materialslab #texasarchitecture #openhouse #grasses #freelunch
MArch student @prarthan_shah, or PK, is spending his semester in Genoa, Italy working at @rpbw_architects as a part of our Professional Residency Program @utsoaprp. Pictured here is a project from PK’s portfolio, completed in collaboration with MArch student Nicole Vice in a Spring 2018 course led by Elizabeth Danze and John Blood . The project is a proposal for an artist residency on a hilly site in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Their proposal consolidates the diverse functions of the residency into one structure to minimize the impact on the surrounding landscape. By breaking up the singular mass into smaller units, the plan creates specialized, intimate spaces of varying proportions for work and communal activities. . At Renzo Piano Building Workshop this semester, PK is working on building sections and elevations for a pediatric hospital in Greece. He’s been enjoying how friendly and laid back the office is, and the two hour lunch breaks on the beach! Last night, Career Services hosted a portfolio workshop where students had the opportunity to meet with employers to get feedback about their portfolios. . As the #1 Most Hired From architecture program in our size group, according to @designintelligenceaec, UTSOA is committed to providing our students with opportunities like last night’s workshop and @utsoaprp to help prepare them for their futures outside our halls. . Thank you to all of the folks who joined us last night, including @designworkshop @stgdesign @studiodwg @mckinneyyorkarchitects @storybuilt_co @gensleraustin @rchstudios and @pagethink. What starts here changes the world! . #UTSOA #TexasArchitecture #whatstartshere
Big congrats to Urban Information Lab students and Associate Professor Junfeng Jiao for winning the 2019 Presidents Award for Global Learning! . Thanks to the $25,000 award, the team will travel to Tokyo this summer to study how autonomous vehicles could improve mobility for Japan’s aging population during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. They are pictured here with UT President @gregfenves at the awards ceremony last week. . PSA: The light is lovely in the Mebane Gallery this afternoon ✨ . Be sure to take a break at some point in the next couple of weeks to soak in and experience this semester’s exhibition, on display until Thanksgiving. . Curated and designed by @morphosisarchitects, “Amplification of Interconnectedness” explores “a loose collection of process moments, as found [but louder]” . . . . #UTSOA #TexasArchitecture #morphosis #ondisplay #onview
It’s feeling pretty festive in the Sutton attic this afternoon 🎃 Happy Halloween!
Earlier this month, four projects designed and built by UTSOA students in the @gulf.coast.designlab advanced architecture studio were recognized by the @cityofgalvestontx with their first ever Planning & Design Awards! The award-winning projects, pictured here, were developed by 45 different UTSOA students over a two-and-a-half year period within Galveston’s Coastal Heritage Preserve and Galveston Island State Park. . Three of the projects recognized by the City of Galveston were created for the Galveston-based nonprofit @artistboat to support the organization’s mission of educating middle and high school students about the preservation of coastal environments: OBSERVE, a bird blind and observatory, was completed in fall 2018; FRAME, and outdoor classroom and shade structure, in spring 2018; and STORE, a kayak and educational resources storage facility, was completed in spring 2017. The fourth project recognized by the City of Galveston, INHABIT, is a shade structure and outdoor classroom completed by students in summer 2017 to support environmental education within @texasparkswildlife’s @galvestonislandstatepark . Join us in congratulating these students on their well-deserved recognition!
